Kayaking at Lake Lanier

Nathan has been a  part of the Richardson Racing League at Lanier Kayak and Canoe Club for the past several seasons.  He loves kayaking!  His most recent regatta was held on Saturday, May 15th, and performed well, as you can see in the photo above.  As a matter of fact, he was invited--once again--to be a part of the Bronze Developmental Program.  According to LCKC's website, Bronze "is an introduction to a structured training program for racing canoe and kayaks...  Practices are structured to begin teaching athletes proper sprint technique, general endurance and speed...  Athletes will have the opportunity to compete in local, regional and national competitions."  Nathan has longed to participate in this program, but the Bronze team practices every day after school, and that simply doesn't work with my teaching schedule. However, during the months of June through October, LCKC is offering a "light" version of Bronze team, requiring practice only three times a week (Saturdays are optional).   And now that summer vacation has started, practice time is mornings from 8:30 until 11:30, which dovetails perfectly with my teaching schedule.  So, although he won't be able to continue after school starts, between now and mid-August, at least, Nathan can work on developing his skills in the sport that he loves.  I am very grateful for this.  And while he is at the lake, I am going to to use my time wisely.  I will go on long walks, and catch up on reading, and work on my writing.  And do a better job of keeping my blog up to date.

Happy Birthday, Dear John!

Thursday was John's birthday. It wouldn't be polite of me to tell you how old he is, so I will reveal only that he is still older than I am. As soon as I finished teaching, we all went out for Mexican food to celebrate. Then we came home and sang "Happy Birthday" and opened presents and ate cheesecake--not traditional, I know, but it's what John wanted. My gift to him was a lewd and lascivious card and concert tickets for Steely Dan at Chastain in August--which will actually be on MY birthday! How cool is that?
